Oaklands Rise Visit
Directors Adam West and Piers Gough had the pleasure of showing team members from both the Mayor’s London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) around Oaklands Rise. It provided an opportunity for LLDC members, coming to the end of their work in Stratford, to see the potential of an area at the very beginning of its regeneration journey and for new OPDC members to see one of the first developments within the OPDC to gain consent and be completed.
The afternoon started with a presentation in The Lab, the on-site Community Hub space run by Bow Arts. James Hawton, project director from Notting Hill Genesis, Piers and Adam discussed the beginnings of the project, including Sir Terry Farrell’s original vision for the area (now 10 years old), the OPDC’s early masterplan and how Oaklands Rise is designed to eventually fit into the bigger picture, which is still evolving. They then headed over to one of the roof garden areas for a good view over the Oaklands Rise development and the whole of London. It was also the perfect location from which to compare the stark contrast between the original ambitious plans for a new piece of city surrounding the HS2/Elizabeth Line Interchange station, with the extensive railway infrastructure which is instead taking shape. Sites for future regeneration and development, between railway lines and tunnel heads, including CZWG’s plans for Oaklands Rise to extend towards the Grand Union Canal, were spotted and discussed.
All agreed that NHG were indeed brave pioneers, but that the area would one day offer real opportunities for a well-connected new neighbourhood.
