The essence of Glasgow’s city centre depends on stone, on classicism and on the grid. What CZWG have done is demonstrate that it is possible to redeploy all three elements in a convincingly contemporary take on the dynamic that gave Glasgow its original urban character.

Deyan Sudjic, formerly Director of the City of Culture

The Cochrane Square site lies between Ingram street and Cochrane Street where the Merchant City meets the civic grandeur of the City Chambers. The legendary Andrew Doolan of Kantel commissioned this grand office building, which was built in two phases for the Housing Department and the Inland Revenue by HBG Properties. The façades of figured Locharbriggs Stone and bronze framed glazing set back twice at the street corner and 5th and 6th floors.

The ‘sliced’ quality of the recessed cornices and column bases echo the architecture of the great Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson. The only projections being the seven pre cast Clyde order column capitals in the form of ships prows which provide crow’s nest balconies on the 4th floor.
