Pavilion Square is a new residential and leisure development within the waterfront Royal Arsenal masterplan in Woolwich.Located on a unique and historic site, the development fronts the grand central boulevard of No.1 Street which is terminated by the Grade I Listed Royal Brass Foundry building – thought to be designed by Sir Christopher Wren. To the north it fronts Artillery Square, adjacent Sir John Vanbrugh’s powerfully mannerist Grade II* listed Royal Military Academy. On the site itself are the two oldest buildings at the Arsenal; a pair of fine Grade II listed Laboratory Pavilions whose original function and the square between them was the production of gunpowder.

CZWG successfully re-planned the disposition of buildings proposed by the masterplan to provide symmetrical framing of the Laboratory Pavilions. An angular shift away from the Royal Brass Foundry is matched by the angle fronting the green space of Maribor Park newly laid out over the route of Crossrail.

Notably, the re-design includes triple height archways inspired by existing archways of the historic institution; these allow a pedestrian desire line to pass through a charming internal green court.

Within the development, the separation of the higher new red brick buildings allows light to enter the central garden space. The elevations feature an allusion to castellation with curved brick corners and turrets and mannered bracketed balconies. The laboratory buildings have subservient but characterful single storey extensions at either end and additional long dormer windows on their roofs.

Throughout the design process, CZWG achieved the challenge of avoiding single aspect north facing flats, reflecting the grand scale of No1 Street and Artillery Square, creating a larger scale but respectful setting for the unique combination of the listed buildings.
