Worstead Estate is 300 acres of private parkland, originally designed as the setting for Worstead House (now demolished). The estate dates back to the sixteenth century and many of its original features and buildings remain, including a lime tree boulevard, two man-made lakes, estate roads, wood yard, stable block and walled garden. The estate owners seeks diversification of an existing agricultural business, and a sustainable tourism and leisure development that actively enhances the character of area.
CZWG's proposals for the restoration of the Grade II listed coach house through the conversion of existing buildings to a restaurant and bar at ground floor, six guest bedrooms at first floor, and eco-friendly design of an extension for the kitchen and back of house. The proposals include a forestry plan and open wood pastures for livestock, generating income for the estate, the refurbishment of derelict sheds, renovation of the greenhouse, general landscape works and additional car parking.
Worsted Estate aspires to make the estate carbon positive by 2030. The objective of significantly reducing the Whole Life carbon output cannot be achieved unless both Embodied and Operational Carbon aspects of the development have been considered. Preliminary calculations show the potential reduction of over 33% for the Embodied Carbon by reusing the steel frame and brick panels from the existing industrial shed. Proposals also include rainwater harvesting and the use of on-site renewables. Shou Sugi Ban charred (carbonated) timber is proposed as the predominant cladding element for the extension to further augment the carbon efficiency of the scheme.
