Located in the historic Roman town of Dorchester, Brewery Square is an extensive mixed-use redevelopment of the former 4.6ha Eldridge Pope Brewery. Situated between Dorchester’s historic market and the main London line station at Dorchester South, the masterplan comprises 660 new homes, a new high quality civic square, shops, restaurants, a cinema, medical centre and a new station. CZWG designed the Brewery Square masterplan and 24 new buildings and, in collaboration with Conran & Partners, who were commissioned to work on the restoration of the listed buildings, secured full planning consent in November 2007. CZWG was subsequently retained to maintain the design standards throughout delivery of the construction programme.
Phase 2A consists of the multi-screen cinema, shops and restaurants, a Premier Inn Hotel, 65 apartments and a 48 room care house in an urban block of five new buildings adjacent to two new public squares: the Dray House yard and ‘Brewery Square’, a large central civic open space with multi-jet fountains and a giant LED ‘Screen-in-the-Square’ at the heart of the development. Fine listed buildings were used to form Brewery Square, but the overall character of the quarter is not only historic but a composite of differing architecture, scale and uses each achieving a considered transition from one character to another. At the eastern edge of the development, two striking stepped roof new buildings provide 46 new Social Rented and Shared Ownership homes.
