Islington Square | Winner in Mixing category at New London Architecture Awards 2021

We're thrilled to announce that Islington Square is the Winner in the Mixing category and shortlisted in the Welcoming category at the New London Awards 2021.

Designed by CZWG for Cain International, Islington Square is a vibrant mixed-use scheme with careful consideration given to how the range of uses sit together to form an inclusive and inviting place that creates opportunities and choices around social activity and authentic experiences.

Building on the rich and diverse physical and cultural identities that define this celebrated district of London, the building exteriors were restored to their original grandeur and the historic space reimagined with new purpose and vitality for the local community.

The winning entries were selected by an international jury for their outstanding contributions to the city, with all awards announced on Friday 26 November at the New London Architecture annual lunch at the Guildhall, London.

Islington Square was praised by members of the jury for its appropriate mix of uses and affordable housing provision.

“Islington Square is very appropriate for this context. It has the most mixed usage with theatres and hospitality, and a range of buildings,” said Benjamin Prosky, International Jury.

“The colour of the building is a bit like Red Bull, but sometimes Red Bull is good in the morning when you need waking up. The square has an interesting dimension. What I like is that there is affordable housing in it,” said Andreas Ruby, International Jury.

Richard Pilkington, Head of European Real Estate at Cain International said: “As a development, Islington Square has always had charisma. From the beginning, we have been sensitive to the history of the building and the Islington area, working to create a modern, flexible space that everyone can enjoy, which is also reminiscent of the past in its design. The result is an exciting mixed-use scheme that has purpose and vitality, delivering authentic retail experiences, social opportunities and beautiful homes. This award is a reflection of that, and we couldn’t be more proud.”

Islington Square is located directly off Islington’s iconic Upper Street, on the site of north London’s former postal sorting office. Retailers taking space at the mixed-use scheme will be situated in a London heritage building, located next to notable names such as Borough Kitchen, Arlo & Jacob, APC and Anatome, restaurants including Megan’s, Jiji, Prezzo and Omnom, a Third Space health club and an ODEON Luxe & Dine cinema. Some of the UK’s top creatives have also taken office space at the development, including Fullwell 73, the production company that counts James Corden among its partners, which occupies 25,000 sq ft.

The annual New London Awards, presented in association with the Mayor of London, celebrate all scales of projects, from community-led to large-scale mixed-use developments that contribute to and enhance the vision of the city.
